Free Solar Panels….is There a Catch?

From recent paper and TV media advertising of ‘free Solar panels’, the Kinglsey Eco Solutions team have had a number of customers asking about the legitimacy of such deals.  Good question!  Is it really free.  Simple answer..YES!  Is there a catch…SORT OF!

You do get free panel, you do get free electricity if you can consume it during daylight hours (no storage- consumed or put back into Nation Grid).  The crunch though is that the money received from the Feed-in- Tariff (FIT) goes to the company that put up your Solar PV system- normally funded by hedge funds- because the investment is 8%+ return on investment and is safe and secure.

Which? magazine recently ran an article in there Green News page on this issue.  To cut to the bottom line…

“…you could save as much as £10,500 by taking out a loan to buy your own system”

They continue,

“You’d be much better off paying to install your own system and keeping the lucrative FIT (Feed-in-tariff) income.”

BBC Breakfast show did a really useful news item on this:

One Response to “Free Solar Panels….is There a Catch?”

  1. Having looked into this a little, the figures quoted to make a purchase of a pv system, (along with the feed in tariffs and savings to the homeowner), make investing in a system a no brainer, with what appears to be great returns over a long period. However, I like many others cannot afford the initial investment, (nor do I want to take the risk of an additional loan or the panels ceasing to work) – so I figure it is better to go free than not at all, the savings aren’t great in comparison but I’m all for a greener life.
