Kingsley Eco Solutions ran a cheese and wine evening at their Renewable Energy Showroom in Ferring, West Sussex, and invited their previous solar PV panel customers to this event.  With presentations by Joanna Brooks, Energy Efficiency Officer at Arun District Council, Peter Longley of smart metering local company Eco Eye and Nick Turnbull, Director of Kingsley Eco Solutions, customers also shared what they are doing to save money from the free electricity they are now generating in their home.

New products to reduce 10% immediately off electricity bills, using solar PV to heat hot water and smart meter monitoring were met with enthusiastic responses. During the evening, homeowners were able to look around the showroom at all the energy saving products, including cavity wall insulation, LED lighting, wood burning stoves, biomass boilers, Rain Water Harvesting and natural day-lighting sunpipes.  Various partnering organisations were present including Titan Insulation

Kingsley Roofing Limited working in Co-operation with Guildford Borough Council is coming to the end of a yearlong contract to re-roof 66 properties.

Work begins on 66 properties

The work included completely stripping the existing roof coverings including all felt, battens and lead flashings, replacing with new breatherable underlay, treated timber battens and Redland concrete plain tiles. Lead flashings were replaced and insulation levels and ventilation upgrades were required to meet current regulations.  Existing fascia, soffits and rainwater goods were also replaced with Upvc products.

Pictured here, Trevor- Kingsley Eco’s Contracts Manager, making a plan for the 200+ panels to be fixed onto the warehouse roofs on the Isle of Wight- which will give the guys at Charnwood Stoves a 50KW solar PV panel system- reducing their electricity by  just under £4000- with a significant income coming from the Feed-in-Tariff, along with cash for exporting any unused electricity generated.  However, as this warehouse houses the manufacturing plant of these high quality British made stoves, very little will in fact be exported but self generated energy will be utilised on site.

Kingsley Eco Solutions are excited to be taking on this exciting project on the Isle of Wight with Charnwood Stoves, helping them become an even Greener company, reducing their own energy bills and saving over 20 tons of CO2 emissions.

Meanwhile our biggest crew have been dedicating their time over at The Arun Civic Centre, in Littlehampton, West Sussex, for Arun District Council. With high wind zones and a flat roof, Kingsley Eco Solutions used a very effective aero-dynamic flatroof mounting kit that dealt with the coastal wind but did not compromise the roof with heavy weight.  It was also incredibly fast to fit- a record 25 kw of panels installed on day 1- just under100 280wp panels.

Kingsley anticipate a similar amount of installs in March- already with an order for a 50kw system on the Charnwood Stoves manufacturing plant on the Isle of Wight- and domestic installs across West Sussex.

The panels will cut the Council’s annual electricity bill by up to £4,000 and pay for themselves in less than nine years. They will also save 20.3 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

Councillor Dudley Wensley, Arun’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Central Services with responsibility for green technology and council properties, was at the Council building to see the panels arrive.

Cllr Wensley said: “These panels bring benefits today and for the future by generating free electricity and reducing our carbon emissions. As a council we are committed to reducing our energy use and carbon footprint. It’s only right we should lead by example.”

Nick Turnbull, director of Kingsley Eco Solutions, said he was delighted to be working with Arun. He added: “Solar panels have become hugely popular and Arun’s residents can be really proud of their local council for showing its commitment to renewable energy.”

We recently attended a school in Storrington which had a leaking flat roof gutter in need of repair. We inspected and proposed repairing by applying a 2 layer torch on felt system to the gutter to provide a cost effective, good value repair. From first call to carrying out work took 1 week even allowing for heavy snow!

A school in Worthing had the lead stolen from one of their roofs and this was causing a leak into one of their classrooms. Kingsley Roofing were called and we replaced the lead with a slate roof and renewed the valleys with new lead, this reduced the risk of theft and ensured the school was watertight.

I have recently sold my home in Goring, Worthing in West Sussex and I have a 2kw system on my south roof- a £30k investment over the 25 year period. Interestingly enough, with these panels on the roof, a wood burner and cavity wall insulation, we achieved a C on the EPC (Energy Performance Calculation) even though we have an open planned conservatory which is not the best at retaining the heat.

From my personal experience, selling panels with your home has a number of issues:

1. The estate agents do not know how to market them.  Our agents simply choose to leave them off the details (only highlighted on one photo). Consequently, it made no impact to a higher price on the home, but rather ‘some thing to be negotiated’ they told me.  to not confuse things and not people off we were told best to not say anything about them!

2. Purchasers did not show much interest in the panels on any viewings.  We attempted to engage with viewers as the agent never mentioned it.

3.  We received asking price- but not based on the panels but the way we had designed and developed the property.

As someone who spends their life talking to people about the benefits of solar I am, to say the least, extremely disappointed and slightly disillusioned by the whole experience.   However, it has lead to a number to conclusions and actions that maybe required:

1. Estate Agents lack of knowledge on Solar, the Feed-in-tariff and savings in the home on energy bills.  In many ways selling solar pv panels with your home is like leaving a old classic car on the driveway with the house- one which increases in value as the years go by.  Agents need to understand the value.

2. Along with estate agents is the need of education of solar in very clear and concise ways for people who have not shown interest previously.  If I’m in the market for buying a house and have not fully understood solar- why would I pay any more for a home.

3. It strikes me that it is too early to see the benefits of solar in the sale of houses.  In a few years time it may be a different story- I’m convinced of it.  People will gravitate to such houses- and it should give the seller a greater chance of a quicker sale, a stronger hold on the asking price or maybe…just maybe a few more pounds over the current value of the property.

With the price of solar having fallen dramatically in the past year and even at the lower FIT tariff of 21 pence – Mr C is expected to receive a 9% ROI. Having also had the system installed before the 3rd of March means that he may well be eligible for the 43 pence tariff for 25 years(depending on the pending government court case at the supreme court). If the Supreme court follow the two previous rulings then he will be receiving in excess of 18% ROI.

With all the current confusion over FITs you may well be thinking now is not the time to install solar PV.  In fact the opposite is true.  Financially and environmentally now is the perfect time to install solar.  One of our installations taking place today in Worthing West Sussex will benefit from the following:

1) Guaranteed feed in tariff of 21 pence per kWh if you choose to install before the 31st of March

This may even go up to 43.3 pence for installs before the 3rd of March following the government losing their appeal at the high court – which really would mean a breath taking return on investment.

2) From April, you may well need to meet very strict energy efficiency requirements

This is following the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) proposing that from April homes will have to meet energy efficiency measures to be elgible for FIT rates. This means you may have to spend more on your home before qualifying for the FIT rates for solar.

3) Reduction in the Price of Panels

During the past year the price of solar has dropped dramatically. This allows you to get a higher efficient system as lower initial cost, whilst still receiving a great return.

4) Energy Prices are Rising

Whilst dipping slightly in the past few weeks, energy prices on average go up 10% each year. Protect yourself from this by installing solar which can cut your bills by up to 50% per year un top of the FIT rate.
